Brent Foster found himself through finding photography.  After recognizing the impact of the craft through his hometown’s newspaper at age 14, the burgeoning photojournalist embraced his life’s passion and pursued his dream without looking back.

“The photo wasn’t just a picture – it was real,” Brent recalls. “It was genuine. Nothing posed or contrived it told a story.”

Weddings are stories,” he continues,“ and each one is as unique as the people living in it. I believe strongly in helping a couple tell their story one picture at a time: I shoot with an album in mind and treat each assignment the same as I have when working for a major newspaper or magazine. I search for the little, unexpected moments that bring out who the couple is, why they’re in love, and how their wedding is something that generations to come will cherish.”

A unique narrative is important to Brent, whose own love story developed alongside his professional one. Going on to contribute to the likes of Time.com, The New York Times, Canadian Geographic and Macleans, Brent began pursuing wedding photography after meeting the “girl of his dreams and living happily ever after”; going on to apply what he learned in the field to the art of capturing two people in love.

“[I’ve learned the importance of] discipline, deadlines and responsibility,” he explains. “When a newspaper or magazine hires me to document a story, they are putting a huge amount of trust and funding into me as a photojournalist. The editorial world is tough and competitive – it takes a lot of responsibility, talent and discipline to make it.”

“I feel those qualities apply perfectly to wedding photography,” he adds. “From organizational discipline to the responsibility of documenting the most important day of someone’s life, the two are very similar. I pride myself on knowing that the clients who hire me will get the best photography possible, and that their cherished moments are in experienced hands throughout the day.”

That special day is one Brent understands all too well. And by defining his art through photographing spontaneous moments like “the reactions, the tears, the light and the looks”, his commitment to capturing the beauty of a couple in love has resulted in a legacy of timeless photographs as unique as the bride and groom themselves.

“My wife Tammy works with me most of the time, and is an amazingly talented shooter herself,” he shares. “We seek clients that fit with our personalities and our approach. We want clients who have done their research and know what they want.”

“Our dream client is someone who is not after the cookie cutter wedding,” he elaborates. “We love DIY décor, fresh venues, destinations, details and amazing personalities. We’re looking for clients who love photography, and are not merely looking to check ‘photographer’ off their list.”

But despite such extensive experience, Brent maintains that he continues to learn, and that his photography is shaped by the weddings he attends and the couples he works with, especially since each celebration often ends in friendship.

“I grow every day as a wedding photographer,” he affirms. “Each and every client I meet helps to shape who I am as an artist. It’s such an amazing business to be in because I get to meet such a diverse group of people on each assignment. I’m so lucky to be able to call my clients friends.”

“This is the one time where the most important people in your life surround you and support you in one room as you exchange vows and begin a new chapter together,” he concludes. “And what could mean more than that?”
