A recipient of several university degrees and a former student of law, Ida of Sweet Sweets made the brave choice to leave academia for a career in the in pastry world, embracing her true calling and taking the concept of pursuing one’s passions to heart. Now one of the go-to cake artists in the wedding industry, Ida’s sincerity and love of her work has made her stand out among her peers, leaving couples thrilled with her cakes and creations that have become integral to complimenting their special day.

I consider myself to be an artist,” Ida began. “I’m not a cake decorator – I don’t have a book or portfolio you could look through and decide which cake design you want. I’m not a baker that bakes hundreds of cakes a day using mixes and oily frosting. I truly take pride in what I create and every detail is important to me – starting with ingredients.

“As for design, no two cakes are alike,” she continued. “When I meet with clients they usually bring along pictures of other cake designs – which is okay – but I truly strive to create a unique and original design for each couple. I want couples to feel like I’m creating their wedding cake, and not some random cake in a magazine.

Having pursued a career of different nature up until recently, it was at the suggestion of those close to her that Ida began to re-evaluate her life path – a decision that has resulted in a genuine happiness that reflects in each and every one of her designs.

“Designing cakes has not been a lifetime dream since I was a child,” she explained. “Actually, my dream was to be a lawyer, and up until a few years ago I was going down that path. But I think that the childhood dream lost its lustre and I needed to find something that I was truly passionate about. A few years ago a family friend suggested that I combine my natural artistic ability with my delicious cakes.”

There’s so many aspects of this career that I truly love,” she added. “It’s an exciting experience to meet [and brainstorm with] new couples with their different personalities. Since each cake is different than each [previous] experience, it’s a unique and rewarding experience. I also love the idea of always challenging myself creatively – using different mediums and being inspired not by other cake designs, but by everything else: from floral arrangements, dresses [and] artwork to architectural design. I enjoy pushing the envelope with my clients . . . in fact, I tell my clients there are no rules in creating art.

An industry prided on its constant state of evolution, wedding cakes have gone from being simply part of a traditional moment to an integral part of the celebration that works to reflect each and every couple. As she grows as an artist, Ida has watched as pop culture infuses itself into the industry, with prominent changes emerging over the past year.

“All of these new cake shows have definitely educated couples [about] the lengthy process of sketching, baking, creating and decorating a wedding cake,” she explained. “I do believe these shows have made my job easier as an artist because they’re seeing when it comes to cakes, ‘anything is possible’. However, I do have to remind some of my clients that it’s still a TV show and I wouldn’t be able to whip a five-tier cake in 20 minutes if it fell down a flight of stairs!”

However, Ida assures that every couple is understanding – that they’re appreciative of her skills as an artist and want only to work with her to create a striking piece that compliments their celebration and union as a couple. And as the wedding industry’s profile rises, so does the importance of the cake.

The wedding cake has really become a show piece of the wedding and not some hidden dessert waiting to be served,” she revealed. “In fact, many of my cakes are displayed on stands with partitions surrounding the cake – like a work of art on display. [I’m] also seeing lots of bold colours, the use of different sizes, shapes, proportions, heights and widths [as well as] different materials – both non-edible and edible – and techniques, [like] ornate painting, patterns [and] use of fantasy flowers.”

“[Also], other dessert options,” she continued. “Cupcakes are hot, and over the past year, it’s been one of the hottest new wedding trends and definitely an alternative to the wedding cake that’s not going anywhere anytime soon.”

In order to help clients decide what cake best reflects their dynamic as a couple, Ida forms friendships with them from the beginning, working to articulate their visions by listening intently and offering her expertise when asked for guidance.

When I meet with clients, the cake is the last thing we discuss,” she admitted. “I go through a series of questions asking them about the decor, flowers, her dress, themes, invitations, colour palette [and] photographer. Knowing all of this information helps me understand the couples’ sense of style, personality and their likes and dislikes.”

“I love every step of the process from initial consultation [and] sketches to delivery and set up of the cake,” she added. “It’s the biggest compliment and honour that a couple has entrusted me to play an integral part of the most important day, and to create the most important dessert in their life. It’s simply an amazing and thrilling experience for me.
