Trends may come and go but we feel like for these trends… their time may have come! Always subjective, of course, but it’s just “been done to death” and are ready to be put to bed in favor of some more fun and fanciful options!
1) Candy Bars. I know… I know… how can we get rid of the sweeties?!?! But in all seriousness – it’s been done! Your cousin/sister/friend/colleague has either done it, been to a wedding thats done it or is contemplating it at this very moment. Let’s get creative… some alternatives:
- pastry stations
- make your own sundae bar (complete with gourmet toppings)
- bubble tea stations
- bubbly bars (champagnes & accoutrements)
2) The Fairytale Gown. Gathered fabric, big pouffy skirts… the heart of a fairytale wedding. Or is it? With modern trends seeing beautifully tailored and fitted gowns, colourful accents, and a sense of style and glamour reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly why go big and overdone? Simple lines, beautiful details, a perfect fit will do more for your body and personal sense of style than a stairmaster or a frilly skirt ever could!
3) Cupcakes. Ok it had to be said… cute and whimsical… sure. Overdone… OMG yes!!! These tasty morsels may have started as budget savers and have certainly come a long way from your grandma’s home baking but still… their not nearly as attractive, inviting or even enticing as a beautifully designed and created custom wedding cake ever could be. Step away from the baking pans and let a masterful cake designer create a showpiece to wow your guests.
4) Signing Mats as Guestbooks. You LOVE your engagement pictures. You want to show them off so you have them as a signing mat at your reception. Guests sign around your beautiful picture and you hang it in your home… or do you??? Most couples never get around to this task or worse still, some drunken friend or loved one writes a clearly inappropriate commentary on the mat and it’s useless to you. Here are some more interesting options:
- recipe cards to share a hearty meal & pass on family favourites
- pieces of fabric to be turned into a throw blanket by a loved one (better still – a blanket and permanent pen to sign)
- a wishing tree for guests
- bottle of champagne for your 1, 5 and 10 yr anniversary
5) Forgetting about your Guests! Time and again couples have a vision of their big day in their mind but often forget about those attending their wedding. How long between ceremony and reception? What time of year/day is your nuptials? Will guests battle traffic, fatigue, hunger, etc? How can you make each one of your guests (no matter the size of the party) feel like they are having dinner in your home? Some ideas:
- limit your guest list to those nearest & dearest
- plan more time to mingle with guests and less for photos between ceremony/reception
- consider music and food your guests will LOVE and not just you
- be generous with floor plans (give extra space and don’t pack them in like sardines)
- pay for parking (if required)
